In sloot en plas Over de natuurschoolplaat van M.A. Koekoek

De natuurschoolplaat ‘In sloot en plas’ van M.A. Koekkoek II is een van de meest iconische schoolplaten uit een bekende 12-delige serie over de Nederlandse natuur in de eerste helft van de 20e eeuw. In ons studentenhuis hing een reproductie van deze schoolplaat op de wc. Tijd te over om de schoolplaat meerdere malen per dag in detail te bestuderen en van het prachtige tafereel te genieten. Pas enkele jaren later kwam ik voor het eerst bij veldwerk in contact met kamsalamanders. Daarbij viel wel meteen op dat de salamanders op de schoolplaat niet geheel natuurgetrouw getekend waren. Wat is er eigenlijk aan de hand met de salamanders op de meest beroemde schoolplaat en welke salamandersoorten zijn erop afgebeeld? En kun je al deze dieren en stadia wel tegelijkertijd in een en dezelfde sloot aantre!en? En valt er wellicht iets meer te zeggen over de plek waar Koekkoek zijn inspiratie vandaan haalde? In ditch and pond, a Classroom Poster by M.A. Koekkoek Adrianus Marinus Koekkoek (1873-1944) was a Dutch painter and illustrator from the famous Koekkoek family of painters. He specialised in nature scenes and created the watercolours for a series of classroom posters about Dutch nature, intended to make pupils aware of the importance of biodiversity and the complexity of ecosystems. This article focuses on the classroom poster ‘In sloot en plas’ (In ditch and pond). It appears that the salamanders depicted are not true representations of the salamanders found in the Netherlands; they have characteristics of both the smooth newt and the crested newt. Looking at the stages of development of the amphibians and the flowering times of the plants depicted, the poster is a compilation of what can be found in a Dutch ditch from April to June. It is important to emphasise that the painter has managed to capture a beautiful, typically Dutch scene. A scene as a reference image for a healthy ditch teeming with aquatic life.
