This paper reports on fishery on the Flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) in the former Lauwerszee and the adjacent part of the Dutch Wadden Sea. Fishermen from e.g. the village of Zoutkamp undertook culturing of young oysters, originating from elsewhere, on specific favourable ‘oyster beds’. The locations for these banks were ‘leased’ from the government. In 1877, the rivers Reitdiep and Lauwers discharging into the Lauwerszee were dammed, changing the hydrographic conditions. Since then the culturing of oysters in the Lauwerszee declined severely.
