Eerste waarneming van de Brakwatercorbula Potamocorbula amurensis (Schrenk, 1861) in Europa

The Asian basket clam Potamocorbula amurensis (Schrenk, 1861) has been found in the brackish part of the river Scheldt estuary. The first finding, a fresh doublet of an adult individual, dates from March 31, 2018. Subsequently the species has been found in several places along the Scheldt estuary, including live specimens. This is the first record of this invasive bivalve for Europe. The species is native to the northern Pacific Ocean along the coasts of southern Siberia, Korea, Japan and China. In 1986 it was introduced in the San Francisco Bay in the United States of America, where it has established itself successfully. Potamocorbula amurensis is on the IUCN-list of 100 World’s Worst Invasive Alien Species.
