Natura-2000 amphibian and fi sh monitoring network: results for North Brabant Since 2018, RAVON is coordinating the monitoring of an increasing number of Dutch Natura 2000 sites. This article gives an overview of the results for the province of North Brabant for the period 2019-2024 and looks at bottlenecks and recovery measures for these species. In most areas crested newt (Triturus cristatus) is scattered and occurs in low numbers. In a limited part of the areas, there are relatively large populations present. Here the species benefi tted from recent measures such as the creation of pools. However, many areas lack suitable breeding waters. Here, the construction of new pools is essential to prevent the species from disappearing over time. In some of the areas, the species is also under pressure as roads cross the habitat and cause traffi c casualties during the reproductive migration. Of the fi sh, the weatherfi sh (Misgurnus fossilis) is scattered. It was not found in almost 40% of the sites monitored during the fi rst monitoring period. Densities are low almost everywhere and the age distribution is unbalanced. This is because there is hardly any reproductive habitat. European Bitterling (Rhodeus amarus) and spined loach (Cobitis taenia) are relatively widespread. In some areas, densities are locally low due to the lack of shore vegetation. Construction of nature-friendly banks may improve habitat here. The brook lamprey (Lampetra planeri) was found in most of the monitoring traject and with a balanced age structure. This is mainly due to the implementation of stream restoration measures in recent years. The bullhead (Cottus perifretum) declined sharply in the river area from 2005 onwards following the emergence of several exotic gobies like the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus).
