Adders op de Wolfhezerheide in de knel

Adderpopulaties zijn gevoelig voor versnippering en achteruitgang van de kwaliteit van leefgebieden. Op de Wolfhezerheide vindt sinds 2017 intensief onderzoek plaats naar een volledig geïsoleerde adderpopulatie. Onderzocht zijn de genetische diversiteit, morfologische afwijkingen in kopschilden als mogelijke aanwijzing voor inteelt én de jaarlijkse schommelingen in populatiegrootte. Habitat fragmentation and degradation are currently threatening Dutch reptiles. On the Wolfhezerheide, an isolated, declining adder population has been intensively monitored since 2017. Microsatellite genotyping resulted in low estimates of genetic diversity at this site compared to larger Dutch adder populations. Furthermore, malformations such as intercanthal-scale fragmentation anomalies are highly prevalent in this population, which may further indicate a depauperate gene pool. Based on the estimated low population size and a high, male-biased mortality, this site was restocked with 7 additional male adders originating from other populations on the Veluwe in 2025. The e!ectiveness of this measure will be assessed with additional monitoring in the coming years.
