De (on)schuld van een adderbeet: bijna gehemeld op Hemelvaartsdag

Er wordt wel eens luchtig gedaan over een beet van een adder. Je gaat er niet meteen dood aan en het zal wel niet zo’n vaart lopen. Soms gaat het om een ‘droge’ beet, waarbij de giftanden alleen worden gebruikt om te bijten en er geen gif geïnjecteerd wordt. Als er echter wel gif wordt ingespoten is dat geen pretje en kan het ook voor een volwassene wel degelijk gevaarlijk zijn. Dit overkwam Peter de Koning in 2022. Als lid van Werkgroep Adderonderzoek Nederland doet Peter onderzoek naar Veluwse adders en kent de gevaren. Een ongeluk zit helaas in een klein hoekje maar de beet kan grote gevolgen hebben. Although most adder bites are so-called ‘dry bites’, they can have serious consequences. This is something Peter de Koning, a member of the RAVON Adder Workgroup, experienced himself on Ascension Day 2022. Even if one follows the venomous-snake handling protocol, an accident can happen in an instant. Together with a student, Peter was monitoring the adders on the Veluwe. When he put one in a container to take measurements, the lid of the box did not close well and the snake was able to escape, biting his little finger in the process. It was obvious to him that venom was injected; it felt like a stab with a hot iron rod. He decided to drive to the train station, a big mistake. After a while Peter started to feel most unwell and was rushed to hospital by ambulance. With his blood pressure dangerously low and his blood clotting, Peter was in serious danger. The pain was unbearable and he su!ered the full e!ects of the envenomation from the bite. After lots of medication and one vial of antivenom, he slowly started to feel better. The wound on his little finger appeared to become a blister, but an operation was needed to remove necrosed tissue. The finger took several months to heal and is permanently deformed, but Peter has recovered and still monitors the adders in his research area.
