This paper describes the different vernacular names for the Whelk Buccinum undatum Linnaeus, 1758 in the Netherlands and other European countries, their biology, subspecies or formas, Whelk fishery by traps and trawling and their near extinction in some parts of the North Sea. Also some recipes for preparing Whelks for consumption are presented.
