The stratigraphy, taxonomy and nomenclature of a Late Miocene assemblage of Pliothyrina Van Roy, 1980 shells from the Westerschelde are surveyed. Taxonomical and nomenclatural issues are addressed, with special attention for the work of Lacourt (1983/1984). The Westerschelde shells are provisionally identified as P. aff. grandis (Blumenbach, 1803). Further research is needed to elucidate the taxonomical status of the NW European Pliothyrina assemblages of Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene age.
