A find of a living specimen of the Nut (or Stream) orb mussel Sphaerium rivicola (Lamarck, 1818) in a former course of the Tjonger near Mildam, Friesland

While looking for additional localities of the invasive mussel species Asian clam Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774) in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands, the author came across a living specimen of the Nut (or Stream) orb mussel Sphaerium rivicola (Lamarck, 1818) in a former part of the river Tjonger near Mildam, southeast of Heerenveen. It turned out to be the first find of this rare species in the province of Friesland.
