After western monkey goby Neogobius fluviatilis was first recorded in the Netherlands in March 2009, the species displayed an invasive colonization pattern within the Dutch Rhine river system. Research in 2009 strongly indicated a different habitat utilization by western monkey goby (i.e., sand dominated substrates) in comparison with other invasive gobies, e.g., bighead goby Neogobius kessleri and round goby Neogobius melanostomus (i.e., rip rap and pebble dominated substrates). Since suitable habitats are widely available throughout the entire Dutch river system including the Meuse, near future distribution and ecological impacts should be monitored closely.
