At the occasion of the erection of the 'Staring' memorial in the 'Gildehaus' sandstone near the village of Losser, the existing knowledge about this member of the Hauterivian is summarized. A detailed description of the lithology at the type-locality is given. The 'Gildehaus' sandstone is characterized by rapidly changing litho- and biofacies. The fauna of the sandstone allows a detailed reconstruction of the environment in which the sedimentation took place. Various facies types are described in detail. It is concluded that the erosion of the Carboniferous of the Rhenish Massif must have supplied the sandy material of the 'Gildehaus' sandstone. The Eastern Netherlands Triassic Swell is not considered to be a source area, since there at Hauterivian time mainly shaly formations were exposed
