Recent data show that the winning of limestone in Southern-Limburg already took place in pre-Roman time with as object the soil improvement. This object has managed to maintain itself up to our century. The Romans initiated the winning of limestone as buildingmaterial in the form of blocks and mortar a custom which continued up to our century too. The winning of limestone for the cementindustry and the chemical factories has added, since the beginning of the 20th century, a new dimension. All in all the winning of limestone in Southern-Limburg is about 2500 years old.
