A large lock-chamber, that will give entrance to a new complex of docks on the left bank of the river Scheldt, is in construction near the village of Kallo (Belgium, province of Oost Vlaanderen), some 10 km west of Antwerp. In the excavation 20.45 m of pliocene and quaternairy deposits are exposed. A lithological description of the profile is given. The section could be extended with 2.25 m by means of a handboring. The pliocene sediments belong to the Sands of Kattendijk (12.25 m) and to the Sands of Kallo (5 in). On top of these about 1 m of sandy deposits is supposed to represent the Sands of Kruisschans (Plistocene). The upper 4.45 m belong to the Holocene. Some paleontological details of the section are mentioned. A description is given of a channel in the upper part of the Kattendijk Sands, that is filled up with sediments from the Sands of Kallo. At this place the Sands of Luchtbal are not encountered, but the basal deposit of the Sands of Kallo contains many derived fossils from the Luchtbal Sands. Fig. 1 gives a diagram of the profile, whereas fig. 2 shows the profile of the channel in the upper part of the Sands of Kattendijk. In the second part of this paper the paleoecology of the deposits is discussed, based on sedimentological and paleontological observations.
