A review is given of the evolution of the different groups of Mustelidae. The Mustelinae are represented in different lines since the Oligocene. The Mellivorinae are only known from the Pleistocene of Asia. The Melinae form a rather heterogenous group, probably not monophyletic. The Lutrinae are a separate group already in the Oligocene.
