Introduction to the author’s Ph.D.-thesis ”A Review of fossil and recent Desmaninae (Talpidae, Insectivora)”, (Utrecht). The traditional standard for the subdivision of genera and species, the molar, has shown itself to be too variable within the limits of a species and has therefore been discarded. In the present view, the morphological features of the incisors constitute the basis of the proposed phylogeny (Table 1), which includes the new genus Dibolia, comprising 9 species of Late Miocene and Pliocene age.
