Analysis of pollen grains obtained from clay in a human femur dredged at Heerewaarden (the Netherlands) revealed the Early Sub-Atlanticum (Subzone Va, ± 800 BC) as its age. Based on the colour of the femur, LIGTERMOET (1985) concluded that it dates from the Iron Age, which agrees with the data of the pollen analysis. The flora and fauna accompanying the femur indicate that we are dealing with an environment characterized by water, swamps and deciduous woods on higher grounds.
