Keeping rhinoceroses in captivity is a practice dating back at least 5000 years. However, the rhinoceroses were treated as objects of curiosity or as producers of medicine. Some thirty years ago a growing concern about the survival changed the attitude. All five living species of rhinoceros are mentioned, with details about numbers in the wild and in captivity.
