The authors describe a distally forked bone found during the excavation of middle palaeolithic levels in the crater of the Wannen volcano (Rhineland-Palatinate, West Germany). Similar finds have often been described as palaeolithic ”artefacts”, but are now thought to be the result of chewing by animals, probably by ungulates.
