For nearly 400 years fossils have been found in pits near the Southern German village Oeningen. These fossils of mammals, fishes leaves and insects provide a beautiful picture of the Mid-Miocene environment. Oeningen played an important role in the development of paleontology, as the locality was already known in the 16th century.
