Dwarfism in elephants is a.o. known from the islands of the Mediterrenean and South East Asia. Various species of dwarfed Stegodon have been found in the Indonesian archipelago. The mammoth of Wrangel (Northeastern Siberia) has also been considered a dwarf. However, without the finds of post-cranial elements there is reasonable doubt whether this is indeed true. A spectacular excavation on the Channel Islands (U.S.A.) yielded in 1994 an almost complete skeleton of the dwarf mammoth Mammuthus exilis.
