A palaeolithic site was discovered in Schöningen (Germany) in 1992 in association with a rich faunal assemblage. A detailed study of the fossil Arvicolidae was undertaken to get an indication of the relative date of the site and the climatic and environmental conditions under which prehistoric man then lived. The results show an Arvicola fauna with species that are indicative of the moderately warm climatic conditions of an interglacial and a date younger than the Late Cromerian site Miesenheim I but older than Maastricht-Belvédère 4 that dates from the Schöningen Interglacial.
