Pleistocene strata often reveal, beside regular horse remains, fossils of ass-like horses. In 1923 five teeth were found in the gravel-pit Maastricht-Belvédère (Limburg, Southern-Netherlands). They are attributed to Equus hydruntinus, an asslike horse from the Middle and Late Pleistocene of Europe and the Near East, and the Holocene of Europe.
