In the period October/November 1996 the author has executed a pilot study in Java, in the first place to determine the possibilities for future excavations in Java. Within this study the focus is on the origin and evolution of modern humans in Southeast Asia (the transition from Homo erectus to Homo sapiens and the origin of the Asians). Various hominid sites have been visited, like Trinil, Sangiran, Sambungmacan, Wajak and Hoekgrot, and the fossil remains of a new site (Song Agung) have been studied.
