The specific name of the North American mammoth Mammuthus columbi (Falconer, 1857), also known by its vernacular name ‘Columbian Mammoth’, has repeatedly been a source of semantic confusion. The intended and exclusive meaning of the Latin genitive columbi is ‘of or pertaining to Columbus’, as was also emphasized by Falconer himself.
