A mandibula with a molar of the vole Microtus oeconomus has been found by the author in sand originating from the North Sea. The age is estimated at Saalien/Weichselien (late Middle to Late Pleistocene). The mandibula measures half the size of the extant subspecies M. oeconomus arenicola from the Dordtse Biesbosch (the Netherlands), although also the Nieuwkoop population contains smaller types. The animal must have lived in a cooler climate, as can be inferred from the contemporaneous mollusks.
