During a symposium concerning saber-toothed cats in Pocatello, Idaho in may 2008, the discovery of fossils of a scimitar cat, tribe Homotheriini, most likely from the genus Homotherium, in a Venezuelan tar pit has been announced. This is the first report of the presence of the scimitar cat cf. Homotherium on the South American continent. This find is part of a series of discoveries made under the direction of Dr. Ascanio D. Rincón and his research workers of the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas (IVIC).
