If there is one group of mammals that displays remarkable island characteristics, it is the proboscideans. Elephants, mammoths and stegodonts show extreme examples of dwarfism with withers heights down to 90cm. Because they are excellent swimmers and can explore land over long distances, their occurrence on islands spreads from western America and western Europe to Asia. Research on these islands has been carried out for decades and is still ungoing. We give an overview of the global distribution of pygmy proboscideans.
