In 1993 Bryum provinciale was recognized for the first time in the Netherlands in the calcareous dunes near Haarlem. At present it has been recorded from quite some localities in the calcareous coastal sand dunes between The Hague and Bergen, and also from several localities in the dunes of the island Texel. The species grows, sometimes abundantly, in open moss-vegetations on calcareous sandy soils.
