Among the members of the genus Colchicum only C. autumnale is indigenous in the Netherlands. Besides this species, several exotic Colchicum species have been cultivated. Some of these latter species have run wild. Especially C. tenorei and C. byzantinum may be confused with C. autumnale. Descriptions of Colchicum species in floras and garden books have not always proved to be correct. Hence the decision to study the Colchicum species in our garden, a few botanical gardens, and natural areas in the Netherlands. It became evident that Colchicum tenorei (also written as C. tenorii) has been sold under the name of C. autumnale. Colchicum tenorei occurs in South Italy and has been described by Parlatore. According to Dr. K. Persson (Göteborg University), the species that is cultivated under this name is probably deviating from Parlatore’s original species and should be called C. tenorei Hort. instead of C. tenorei Parl. The features of C. autumnale, C. tenorei, and C. byzantinum are presented in a table.
