Biotope mapping is a well-experienced tool for nature conservation in Germany. The selective method is mainly used in open landscapes. For cities the comprehensive method has proofed to be more suitable. A critical analysis of the method and application of biotope mapping in urban regions is presented. Improvement proposals are submitted, which refer mainly on two topics: the role of land-use and the necessity of an anthropocentric-utilitarian nature conservation.
