Based on a palatinal fragment with dentition a new species of equids is described from the upper part of the lower coal seam of the Geiseltal (‘Obere Unterkohle‘ = early Middle Eocene = early Geiseltalian = upper MP 11): Lophiotherium sondaari n.sp. This is stratigraphically the earliest record of the genus. The morphologically and stratigraphically transitional position of the new species suggests to derive Lophiotherium from Hyracotherium. Palaeoecologically, Lophiotherium sondaari and Propalaeotherium parvulum seem to substitute each other.
