It is shown that for an irradiation program of far red – darkness – far red the length of the lagphases for respectively synthesis of hydroxycinnamic acids and induction of phenylalanine deaminase subsequent to the onset of the first and the second irradiation are of the same order of magnitude. This finding is discussed in relation to different hypotheses for the mechanism of far-red action in photomorphogenesis.
