In January 1997 a census of wintering raptors was carried out in the Hoeksche Waard, situated in the delta of the southwestern Netherlands. A total of 265 raptors comprising ten species were observed (Table 1). Due to the scarcity of Common Voles the Kestrel decreased by 65% in comparison with the 1996-count (when voles reached a peak). The total of 180 Common Buzzards was the highest ever recorded during mid-winter counts in this region. Two White-tailed Eagles wintered again along the banks of the Hollandsch Diep-Haringvliet.
