In January 1998 and 1999 counts of wintering raptors were carried out in the Hoeksche Waard, situated 20 km south of Rotterdam, in the northern delta of the southwestern Netherlands. For the first time since 1983, both in 1998 and in 1999 a total of more than 300 raptors were counted. Common Buzzard is doing well in the Hoeksche Waard, both as winter visitor and as breeding bird. Summer 1998 20 pairs of Common Buzzards were found in the area. Sparrowhawk (5 pairs in 1998) and Goshawk (2-3 pairs in 1998) have recently colonised in the Hoeksche Waard.
