In 2000, a pair of Hobbies nested successfully in Amsterdam-Slotermeer. The birds used an old nest of a carrion crow at a height of 25 m, almost above a tennishall which was brightly lit at night, and next to sports fields used for playing tennis during the day (including several busy tournaments), a parking lot, a train station and an occupied Magpie nest. During a storm on 27-28 May, a tree fell down some 50 m away from the nesting site, followed by hectic activities involving clearing the pathway (sawing and removal). Both fledglings behaved in a secretive manner, never flying towards parents arriving with food. Two nests of Woodpigeons were situated nearby, from one of which a 3-week old nestling was taken by the Hobbies (found underneath the nest, plucked).
