On 5 June 2008, 17.45 h, two adult Common Gulls were heard alarm-calling in the dunes of the Dutch Wadden Sea Island of Vlieland. Upon approaching, a male Marsh Harrier was put up from the vegetation, where an incomplete clutch of a Common Gull was found. One of the eggs was freshly broken, the other was still intact. Although the actual act of depredation was not witnessed, the Marsh Harrier was thought to have been responsible for the broken egg. The presence of egg yolk and albumen showed the egg to have been fresh, which refutes the possibility that the harrier might have located the nest by hearing pipping chicks.
