In August 2008, the smallest of two Honey Buzzard chicks found on a nest in the southern Netherlands (Nederweert) showed defective feather growth, especially in the primaries (outermost 5-6 lost, deformed, stunted or twisted), secondaries (partly lost, some twisted) and rectrices (twisted and deformed). The bird was admitted to a rehabilitation centre, but died two days later (then weighing only 358 g). Its sibling fledged successfully. This is the second case of pinching off in Honey Buzzards in The Netherlands, the first one recorded in 2004 (Bijlsma & van den Burg 2006), and – as far as we know — the only ones mentioned so far for Eurasia.
