During a visit to southern Sweden, a Merlin was observed capturing and eating dragonflies, on 19 September 2009. After checking the photographs, it turned out that the lower mandible of this female bird was malformed, presumably the reason why she would have been unable to dismember vertebrate prey, and hence was obliged to capture soft-bodied invertebrates.
