In 2011, a pair of Black Kites nested successfully in a nature reserve in the southeastern Netherlands. The small nest was situated in a poplar Populus sp. and might have been an old crow’s nest Corvus corone. Two chicks were raised, and egg laying was estimated to have started on 13 May. The pair presumably mostly fed on voles, but the only prey identified was a Hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus. The pair actively defended the nesting area and successfully chased a female Goshawk Accipiter gentilis.
