In 1992, two 12-year-old boys detected the nest of a Honey-buzzard near Bergen in the dunes between Camperduin and Wijk aan Zee (7189 ha), the first nest for this region ever. In 1995, at almost the same site, the first successful breeding attempt was recorded. Not until 2002 was a second nest found near Bergen, which was successful. In the years in between. Honey-buzzards were present with 0-3 territories, but never succesful. From 2004 onwards, annually 1-3 successful breeding attempts were recorded, and the number of territories gradually increased to 4-6 in 2009-11. Between 1992 and 2011, 17 successful nests (15x in a pine, 2x in an oak) raised a total of 26 young. Five times fledged young (at least 6) were observed before mid-August, but the nest escaped detection. Two times predation of an adult Honey Buzzard – probably by a Goshawk Accipiter gentilis – was recorded.
