During spring 1994, the fate of 21 nests of Oystercatchers was recorded near Assen, an inland breeding area consisting mainly of farmland (arable land and meadows). Most nests were found during May and early June (Table 1). Nest survival during incubation was very low, only 14% (Mayfield-method). Nine nests were destroyed during farming operations (cultivating, spraying), one nest was probably trampled by cattle, one nest was destroyed during heavy rainfall and two other nests were found empty (Table 2). In the outskirts of Assen, a nest was found on the roof of a building; the only chick injured a leg (probably because of jumping off the roof) and was later killed by traffic.
