Singing Tengmalm’s Owls were a regular feature of State Forestries in the province of Drenthe in the 1970s (Boerma el al. 1987). Despite systematic surveys, very few Tengmalm’s Owls were registered in these forests since 1980. Two singing males were heard in 1987 in State Forestry Grolloo and one singing male in 1994 in State Forestries Hooghalen and Grolloo each. Breeding was not recorded. Given the increase in German and Belgian populations in the 1980s (the nearest at 200 km from Drenthe), successful settlement in Drenthe’s forests is to be awaited.
