Staging Whimbrels in Drenthe mainly foraged on grassland, both in spring (85% of flocks) as in autumn (65%). Well-wooded areas and densely populated regions were largely avoided. This finding probably reflects the distribution of its main food source, leatheijackets and earthworms, although this was not quantified.
