An isolated sand dune in the northern Netherlands (Aekingerzand, 100 ha in 1989) was enlarged to an area of 1.5x1.5 km in the mid-1990s by cutting woodland and removing humus. This area became occupied by a pair of Tawny Pipits in 1997, which produced three fledglings. This was the first successful breeding case in Drenthe since at least 50 years, although a solitary male had been recorded in the area in 1989,
