Historical reports about quail hunting date back more than 3000 years. In the Netherlands the species was hunted up to 1924 and in the Province of Drenthe up to 1914. In the Netherlands Quails were usually caught by luring them into several kinds of nets, especially designed for that purpose.Through 1878-1914 the hunting season in the Province of Drenthe tended to start and finish earlier (Figure 1, Appendix 1). The reason for this anticipation is unclear, all the more Quails in Drenthe in 1981-90 arrived much later than the opening of hunting season 100 years ago (Appendix 2). It is unknown if quails arrived earlier in those days.
