The region where the plants mentioned in the following list were found is situated between latitude 36° and 37° north, longitude 74° 20' and 75° 50' east of Greenwich. The route followed started from Hunza, between the Hindu Kush and the Pamirs on the Gilgit-Garkand road and led: 1. to the Khunjerab, Ghujerab and Shimshal valleys (including many unknown lateral valleys and glaciers) all of these situated on the northern side of the Kara-Korum range; 2. the Batura glacier which reached the Hunza valley beyond Pasu; 3. the Hispar glacier, in the State of Nagar, up to the Hispar-Kunyang junction. The whole district is an arid desert of sand and stones, where deeply cut valleys and ravines penetrate into the heart of the gigantic mountains which rise to a height of 25.868 feet (7830 m). Cultivation is only possible where the soil is irrigated. Scanty patches of arable land surround the villages, but decrease according to altitude. The plants growing as weeds in the fields were found on the Hunza-Gilgit road and in Shimsal-village.
