Large quantities of plastic pellets were recorded on several places on the Dutch coast in winter 1988/89. The data were not collected in a systematical way, but estimated is that at least several tons of pellets had washed ashore. Several different types of pellets were collected, and therefore more than one dumping of pellets has been responsible. The occurrence of plastics in the marine environment is briefly discussed and the (largely unknown) effects of plastic pellet ingestion are indicated.
