During 2835 hours of seawatching at the Texel North Sea coast during 1980-86, only 41 sea mammals were seen (Harbow and Grey Seals, Harbour Porpoise and unidentified dolphin, table 1). Most marine mammals were spotted in winter: Harbour Seals often during spells of heavy frost, all Harbour Porpoise in mild seasons with westerly winds prevailing. A number of records of Grey Seals refer to the same individual: a large bull named ’Nico’, which had escaped from the basins of the Research Institute for Nature Management (RIN) on Texel.
