Nieuwe kolonie Aalscholvers Phalacrocorax carbo: Rottumeroog

Great Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis greatly increase in roosting numbers in the Dutch Wadden Sea in recent years, and after firm foothold in the form of nesting colonies on the artificial island De Hond (140 nests, 1995-97) and on Vlieland (253 pairs in 1997), a new colony was founded on Rottumeroog (13 nests in 1997). Sinds het begin van de jaren tachtig is het aantal pleisterende Aalscholvers Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis in de Nederlandse Waddenzee en ook elders langs de kust sterk toegenomen. Op het kunstmatige eiland 'De Hond' kwam de soort al snel tot broeden (Leopold & Van den Berg 1992, Koks 1996) en hier is de populatie de afgelopen jaren gestabiliseerd op 140 paren (Ben Koks pers. comm.). Een tweede vestiging volgde op Vlieland in 1994 (Camphuysen et al. 1995, Koks 1996) en in deze snel groeiende kolonie kwamen in 1997 liefst 253 paren tot broeden (Ben Koks pers. comm.). Het broedsucces op zowel de Hond als op Vlieland is uitstekend.
