This is the second report on results of seabirdobservations, obtained at the offshore platform "Meetpost Noordwijk" (further MpN) from 1978 through 1981. The report deals with Geese and Ducks (7.1), Raptors (7.2), Rails (7.3) and Waders (7.A). For a detailed explanation of diagrams and tables, see report no. 1. (7. Species accounts) The total number of birds (Anatidae-Scolopacidae) is presented in table 7.1 (page A7). Section 7.1 through 7.4 are the species accounts, and these can be summarized as follows (the summary only deals with birds discussed in detail): Brent Branta bernicla was seen both in spring and autumn regularly. In spring the majority was recorded in March (figure 7.1.1). As the platform was manned in 1980 only in this month, comparison of the results of several years is not possible. The numbers of Brents observed were slightly smaller compared to the mainland coast of Zuid-Hol1 and. At the coast of Noord-Ho11 and the Brent was much more common (table 7.2). Spring-migrants were seen to arrive from the seaside, heading in the direction of the mainland coast. Small numbers were seen in autumn, a majority in November (85%). The Common Scoter Melanitta nigra was by far the most abundant duck-species during observations at MpN. Massive springmigration was recorded in April 1978 and April 1981. All but very few heading north in this period (98.9% northbound). Simultaneous seawatches are shown in table 7.3 (page 53). We can see large numbers heading north at MpN and at Hondsbossche Zeewering (Hbz., Noord-Holland) some days, with comperatively small numbers at the sites on the mainland coast of Zuid-Holland (Scheveningen (Sch) and Noordwijk (N'w)). In contrast, large numbers flying in a southerly direction at Hbz. were not recorded at MpN nor at the mainland sites of Zuid-Holland. The Common Scoter was recorded in autumn regularly, but in smaller numbers. Any regular migration of Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca was only seen in April. Large flocks were observed in April 1978 and 1981, all heading north. The Velvet Scoter was more numerous at MpN as it normally is at the sites at the mainland coast of Zuid-Holland, suggesting offshore migration on this latitude along t*he Dutch coast (a fast majority 10 km from the beach). The Velvet Scoter was rather scarce in autumn. Red-breasted Mergansers Mergus serrator were seen in spring and autumn in small numbers. This species is more numerous at the mainland sites, both in spring and autumn. There was some springmigration observed of waders, but the numbers were low compared to the numbers observed at the mainland coast. This may partly be due to the irregular manning of the platform as heavy movements are normally seen at very few days. Some migration of Grey Plover Pluvialis squaterola was recorded in april and may, in very small numbers, especially when the wind was blowing from easterly directions (NW-SE, figure 7.4.4). The greater part of the Knots Calidris canutus was seen during the first week of May. May 1981 showed, on average, more Knots at MpN than along the mainland coast of Zuid-Holland (table 7.6). Dunlins were seen both in spring and autumn more or less regularly, but again in small numbers compared to the data of the mainland sites. Some migration was recorded in March through April and September through October. With the Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica we're discussing the most numerous wader in spring with 909 birds counted The greater part was observed in April. The numbers were again small when compared with coastal observations. Finnally, some remarkable large flocks of Whimbrels Numenius phaeopus were observed at MpN. With only one hour showing more than 100 Whimbrels along the mainland coast (Scheveningen, 25th April 1981, 116 N), the one hour totals of MpN from 21st April 1981 (105) and 22nd April 1981 (85) are rather good.
